Which Is Better – H.320 or H.323 Video Conferencing?

Video conferencing means the communication between two or group of persons with video and audio contact from different places using computer, video camera and Internet. International telecommunication union introduces video conferencing standards, which specify requirement for video conferencing equipment on different types of network. ISDN video conferencing allows the user to transmit their voice, data, text, graphics and other materials to transmit through telephone wires.

It is extremely useful method of communication as it saves money and time at the same time enables visual contact via video. Videoconference is also useful for distant education, where students sitting in remote corners could still access educational materials and listen to lectures. Internet Video conference allows the user to connect to the whole world and the messages are transferred within a fraction of second. Video conferencing over ip is becoming cheaper and also faster by the day. Video conferencing protocols H.320 and H.323 are the most commonly used standards for videoconferences.

H.320 Video Conferencing

H320 – is an established standard using dedicated ISDN lines at both ends of a dial-up link to enable conferencing. It is generally point-to-point (i.e.) a conference with two groups and a single information path between the two ends of a connection.

Each ISDN line has a combined bandwidth of 128k. These lines can be combined by using an imux (inverse multiplexor) to increase performance. Typical ISDN videoconferencing systems operate at 128k (1 ISDN Line) or 384k (3 ISDN lines). ISDN Video conferencing using H.320 involves narrow band transmission. It is one type of H protocol and it includes

1. T.120 – Real time data conferencing.

2. H.323 – Video communication on Local Area network

3. H.324 – High quality video and audio compression over POTS modem connection.

It is an umbrella standard for an end point connecting over ISDN. If LAN or WAN connection does not exist, then the easiest and cost effective means of connecting all the endpoint through ISDN, especially if the endpoints are in different countries. Internet Video conference is allowed in h.320 to share the information between countries. ISDN has two-interface namely basic rate interface and primary rate interface. The BRI has B-channel with 64kpbs and D-channel with 16kpbs. PRI has multi-channel with more than thirty 64 b-channel for data transmission and 64kpbs D-channel for network control. The b channel has its own number. Using Multipoint control unit it possible to share data between groups of person for that h.320 MCU should be used. And MCU should be capable of presenting the conference in full screen, two-way, five-way etc. The benefit involves high performance; the frame rate is more but requires installation cost.

H.323 Video Conferencing

H323 is a newer standard using the internet protocol (IP) to carry information. This is generally point to point, but multipoint implementation is more straightforward as IP networks are inherently able to allow many-to- many communication. H.323 computer and equipment can carry audio, video and data is formatted and packaged for transmission over IP Network; LANs and even over Internet in real time using RTC/RTCP over public switch telephone network using IP address.

Video conferencing bandwidth is higher for H.323 compared to H.320. IP video conferencing is done only through H.323 over a LAN, WAN or Internet. In previous protocol the service has to depend on a centralized server to perform the communication but after introducing the H.323 does not require any centralized server unless insisted by the user. Components of H.323 are 1 Terminal 2 Gateways 3 Gatekeepers 4 Multi-Point Control Units.

Video conferencing over LAN is done through IP address that is dynamic in nature within a room or small organization, now many companies use Network Address Translation to reuse the IP address but IP domain name is usually static. The network manager can restrict the amount of bandwidth used. Conferencing in Internet is also possible by using IP address using Gateway. Gateway will translate the address in to ISDN or IP address according the end user. The Gatekeeper acts as a monitor for H.323 calls within its zone and allows call permission and address resolution and it acts as an administrator on the network and controls traffic on the network, even free H.323 gatekeepers are available at present.

Benefits include centralized and decentralized control depending upon the user. It is Network, application and platform independent and has multipoint support.
